Rivers: ‘Why JUSUN Is Still On Strike’
The Judiciary Staff Union
of Nigeria (JUSUN), Rivers State chapter has given reasons why the state chapter of the union is still on strike despite the National directive of the suspended nationwide indefinite strike few weeks ago.
Speaking to The Tide the state chairman of the union, comrade Sokari George said the union demands have not been addressed by the appropriate authorities in the state.
George said the union in the state embarked on strike before the nationwide industrial action declared by the national secretariat of the union, stressing that the internal issues of the union in the state were different from the demands of the national office of the union.
The JUSUN boss explained that the union will call off the strike action in the state when the demands of the union properly addressed.
He said the union’s Executive members are responsible and patriotic leaders who are out to protect the lives of the union members and properties within the courts’ premises in the state without compromise.
The labour leader urged the various stakeholders in the justice administration in the state and the appropriate authorities to immediately address the demands of the union in the interest of industrial peace.
However, The Tide investigation revealed that the union industrial action will soon be called off as the stakeholders in the Justice administration in the state have intervened to resolve the demands of the union amicably.
According to the secretary of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Port Harcourt Branch, Mr Victor Benibo normal court activities would soon resume in the state.
He said as lawyers return from the NBA Annual National Conference holding in Owerri from August 24-29 they will resume normal court activities despite the Judges and courts being on annual vacation.
Benibo explained that JUSUN strike action has actually affected lawyers and legal practice in the state stressing that the various branches of the NBA in the state are happy that the strike action would soon be called off by JUSUN in the interest of good industrial Peace.
Meanwhile, the National Secretariat of the JUSUN has threatened to resume its suspended indefinite strike, if the union’s demands are not met after the 45 days period set aside for a committee set up to look into the full implementation of the court order on the direct funding of the Judiciary.
In a statement issued through comrade Isaiah Adetola for the union, the Union decided to suspend its nationwide strike to give room for the implementation of the agreement on judicial independence.
It would be recalled that JUSUN had embarked on strike action in July to Press for the immediate implementation of federal High Court Judgement that judicial funding should be paid directly to the National Judicial Council NJC as provided for by the 1999 constitution as amended.
