Retired Delta State High
Court Judge, Justice Thompson Dugbo, has said that corrupt politicians have infiltrated the Nigerian Judiciary.
He noted with regret that the judiciary was hopelessly rotten.
Dugbo who spoke to newsmen in Warri, Weekend, argued that judges, who ought to be conformist in their dealings and in public appearances, now mingle ravenously with corrupt politicians, who use them.
He said: “Corruption is so entrenched in Nigeria that the sacred institution known as the judiciary is now infected with virus. Very young persons, including politicians  are now appointed to the higher beneh. The National Judiciary Council, NJC, has allowed the governors to nominate their stooges and brothers for appointment to the higher beneh.
They recommend their corrupt followers and friends to be appointed. People less than 50 years ought not to be appointed Judges. Some have not even married. When appointed, they look for money by all means, including bribery just to live a comfortable life.
“Some have no houses of their own. When appointed, they want money to build, they want mansions for themselves.
“Judges were hardly seen outside their quarters, but these days Judges are found in marriage ceremonies, burial ceremonies and so on.
He stressed the influence exerted by politicians on today’s judges was becoming dangerous, and that judges were getting too exposed to the public.
He recounted: when I was a full time judge I never attended any party, not even when my daughters got married. I left everything for my younger brother to do, while I was indoors for fear that I would meet big politicians and rich men who may want to exercise influence on me to go against my conscience.
I was previleged to go around Delta State to see the type of buildings worth billions of naira built by politicians. Some even have 10 buildings of that nature.
“It is in all the states of the federation, then go to Abuja, it is owned by politicians. What a dirty country we inherited. In the villages the ordinary people can not afford a square meal.”
Dugbo opined that only old and experienced judges should be appointed to preside other election tribunals because “they have no shake in these elections. “Retired old Judges have no business with mansions. They are used to sectuded Lives and dant think of riches.
