The Prisons authorities say they have uncovered plot by some criminals to bomb the Port Harcourt Prisons and create an opportunity for inmates to escape justice.
The Comptroller, Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Mr. Patrick O. Ondoma, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in his office in Port Harcourt, the State capital, shortly after the decoration of newly promoted officers, said that the plot was being hatched both within and outside the confines of the prisons.
He said that the threats have already been reported to the Rivers State Government and the various security agencies, while the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service has been written formally seeking his permission to transfer  some criminals in the Port Harcourt prisons out of the state to a more secure location.
Ondoma also said that the command has taken security measures to checkmate the activities of some criminal elements in both Port Harcourt prisons and other prisons in the state.
Meanwhile, 127 promoted officers serving in the Rivers State Prisons Command have been decorated with their new ranks.
The figures shows that 63 officers were promoted in the Inspectorate cadre, 64 promoted from Assistant Superintendant of Prison (ASP 11) to Chief Superintendant of Prisons (CSP), and three from Deputy Comptroller of Prisons (DCP) to Comptroller of prisons (CP).
The three Cps were decorated at the Owerri Zonal Office of the prisons service.
In his address, during the ceremony, the state comptroller of the service, Mr. Patrick Ondoma described the promotion as first of its kind in the Rivers State Command.
He said that the ceremony represented a call on the affected officers for higher responsibilities.
“Let me also use this golden opportunity to remind the officers for whom we are all gathered here that promotion is a favour from God, and with this, more responsibilities are expected from each and every one of them in the course of their service to the nation,” he said.
He also charged those who were not successful in the promotion interview to continue to seek the face of God and serve the nation diligently.
