NUP Kicks Against Payment Deduction
The leadership of the
Nigeria Union of Pensioners has kicked against the deduction in the union membership pension payment by 20%.
In a statement by the National President of NUP, Dr Abel Afolayan said the union has never consented or accepted the cut and deduction in the pension payment.
Afolayan said the Union has constantly agitated for the stoppage of the deduction by the government .
He said the union has not willingly accepted the recommendation to scale pension payment down from 53.41 percent to 33%, adding that the NUP was compelled to accept the scale down to create room for further negotiation for the payment of the remaining balance of 20%.
He urged the government not to misconstrue and misinterprete the good intention of the Union Leadership Afolayan also urged the management of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) to step up effort in the payment of some outstanding arrears of pension of various categories and the pay rolling of new enrollees for payment as well as payment of pension and death gratuities to the deserving pensioners.
He said the step would convince the apprehensive pensioners of its (PTAD) action plan as well as prove skeptics wrong.
It would be recalled that the federal government cited removal of 10% as tax, 2.5 percent as deduction for the national Housing scheme and 7.5 per cent contributory pension scheme as the reason for the down scale deduction.
