Worried by the poor
power supply in the Niger Delta, youths of the region have challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to take urgent steps towards ensuring improved electricity supply for the sustainable socio-economic development of the area.
The youths who spoke under the aegis of the Niger Delta Youth Coalition (NDYC) said in the over all reform of Jonathan’s administration, power plays a determinant role and that if power is not got right, other aspects of his reform might not be right.
The National Co-ordinator of NDYC, Prince Emmanuel Ogba told The Tide Saturday in Port Harcourt that in the four states in Niger Delta region – Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, the epileptic supply of power has become a major frustration being faced by the people.
“The idea of privatization of the power sector is a novel one, but what the investor in charge of distributing electricity to people of these four states is doing, works in contradiction of the objective of the privative initiative”, he said.
Ogba called on the Niger Delta Development Commission to save the situation through mass installation of solar power in the region to complement the poor supply by Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company in the four states.
“Let NDDC initiate more solar power projects in these states. It is a direct way of touching their lives. Such step will be a way out from the shameful power supply from PHED,” he said.
NDYC leader said time has come for the government to have a critical look at the performances of the private investors with hope of reviewing the real performances of those not living up to expectation for the interest of the masses and the government”, he said.
