Ikuru Rates Amaechi High On Educational Dev
The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru has described as unparalleled the achievements of the present administration in the education sector.
Ikuru, who said this at the public presentation of the Book: “The professional and Ethical Teacher: The Quest For Efficiency” by Dr. Jacob Sunday Akikibofori in Port Harcourt, said that the feat was responsible for the current World Book capital status of the city of Port Harcourt.
The deputy governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the office of the Deputy Governor, Evangelist eddy Oloko, said that the book presentation was coming at a time when Rivers people were celebrating the Port Harcourt World Book capital 2014 status.
According to him, the UNESCO World Book Capital project was meant to promote reading culture among the people, and commended the author for contributing towards the advancement of education in the state.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Rivers State Secondary Education Board, Chief Alwell Onyesoh, said that the book will help policy makers to solve many problems confronting the education sector.
Onyesoh also directed principals of every secondary school in the State to purchase a copy of the book, read and internalize it.
The Chairman of the occasion, Mrs Augusta Fubara described the presentation as timely as the book will help solve some challenges in the education sector, and recommended it as a must-read for teachers, students and policy makers in the sector.
Fubara, who is also the State President of Association of Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) donated the sum of N150,000 for copies of the book.
Reviewing the book, Professor Innocent Modo said that the book is a response to the myriads of challenges in the education sector.
Modo, who blamed the poor standard of education on the absence of ethics for teachers, said that the book has filled that vacuum.
In an interview with The Tide later, the author of the book, Dr. Jacob Sunday Akikibofori advocated for the enforcement of discipline in schools.
He said that, the society must return to the olden days when hardwork among students and teachers was the hallmark, while constant training should be organised for teachers.
