A Lagos State-based hu
man rights organisation in the country, “the Philia Life Foundation” has advocated the need for every citizen in the country to have his rights protected and upheld in the society.
The president / co-founder of the group, Mr Micheal Asuguo made this assertion in Port Harcourt, while speaking with journalists last Monday.
Mr Asuquo averred that the topic of  human Rights in Nigeria remains very sensitive despite efforts made by various human rights advocates in Nigerian, the rights of  individuals he said continues to be abuse across the country.
According to him “disrespecting tones, refer the country as a jungle because of this and to support their stand, claim that the difference between a society and a jungle may lie in set laws and pershap more importantly how those laws are upheld”.
Mr Asuguo stated that when it came to the area of the rights of citizens in the country people tended to be dispassionate over it and added that criticisms in that regard were endless.
He posited that the association which was founded in 2013 by seven young Nigerians was borne to give value to the society as well as to propagate the crusade of human rights adhewance in the society, adding that the philia project was also aimed at educating Nigerian youths on the 30 Human rights as set out by the United Nations Declaration on December 10, 1948, as well as to sensitise children on how to uphold these rights in the society.
The president of the foundation disclosed that their target at the moment was how to be in all the cities of the Niger Delta regions to educate the citizens on their human rights and how to protect it within their immediate societies.
He averred that there were more challenges associated with the task of sensitising people on their rights as they received threats calls and messages adding that such will not debar the group in its determination in offering their services to a truly developed society in the country.
“Another notable challenges they have received these months came on the form of threat calls surprisingly in teaching children to live above any form of slavery by respecting House boys / girls in their homes, certain people accused them of poisoning the minds of the children to wards societal norms and perhaps, teaching the children insubordination to parents. Most in society do not expect their House boys / girls to be given equal treatment as the biological children of the home”, he stated.
