TUC Urges Lawyers To Defend Democracy
Nigerian lawyers have
been urged to defend the nation’s fledgling democracy and promote good governance in the country.
The Chairman, Rivers State chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Chika Onuegbu, gave the charge last Wednesday, while addressing the new executive members of the State chapter of Lawyer Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) at the union’s secretariat in Port Harcourt.
Comrade Omuegbu who described lawyers as key instruments to the promotion of democracy and good governance in the country, called on lawyers to also ensure equity and justice and fair play in the discharge of their duties.
According to him, lawyers are more relevant to governance than some other professionals, saying, as legal professionals, they knew the right process to follow to ensure that good governance was promoted in the country.
The TUC boss advised lawyers to be above board in their professional conduct and as well see themselves as key instrument in the development and promotion of democratic society.
The State Secretary of LOAN, Barr. Romeo Isokariari, who spoke on behalf of the new executive, pledged the union’s commitment towards good governance in the state.
The state LOAN also passed vote of confidence on the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon Wogu Boms.
