Traditional Rulers in
Ogoni speaking areas of Rivers State have thrown their weight behind the Ogoni governorship aspiration in 2015, as they have also demanded for the creation of Bori State.
The traditional rulers, drawn from four local government areas in Ogoni, Eleme, Tai, Khana and Gokana, made their position known in a communiqué issued at the end of a one-day mini congress of the Ogoni Ethnic Nationality organised by the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers at Sankpenwa in Tai Local Government Area, last Saturday.
They argued that the demand by the Ogoni to produce a governor in 2015 was justifiable.
The communiqué was signed by the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM, King Godwin Giniwa; a member of the National Conference, Justice Peter Akere (Rtd); Gbenemene Gokana Kingdom, King Barnabas Pengo Bagio; Gbenemene Babbe Kingdom, King M.K.F. Noryaa III; Paramount Ruler of Ogale Clan, Eleme, Chief Babe Ukpabe; President of Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme Local Government Areas (KAGOTE) and the Assistant Secretary of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Comrade Chirs Ikoma
The communiqué sought the understanding, cooperation and support of other ethnic nationalities in the state towards the Ogoni governorship bid.
According to the statement, it would be in the interest of fair play, equity and justice for other ethnic nationalities in the state to concede the state governorship to Ogonis in 2015, moreso that other ethnic groups had in the past benefitted from the Ogoni support.
They also insisted on the inclusion of Bori State among states to be recommended for creation in view of the economic viability of the area and its enormous capacity for statehood.
The communiqué called on sons and daughters of  Ogoni to remain united and resolute in the actualisation of their quest for social, political and economic advancement, noting with regret that despite their huge contributions to the peace and sustenance of Rivers State and Nigeria, the Ogonis have deliberately been oppressed, neglected and marginalised socially, politically, economically and otherwise.
“We are deeply troubled by the prolonged delay in the implementation of UNEP Report by the federal government of Nigeria almost three years after it was released and passionately demand without delay, the immediate implementation of the report,” the conmmunique said.
