Sanitation Marshals Want Improved Facilities At Abattoirs
The Coordinator of
Rivers Special Sanitation Marshals, Prince Sodin Akiagba has criticised local government councils in Rivers State over their failure to provide conducive environment at abattoirs. Speaking in interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Prince Akiagba said that most abattoirs in the state lacked the basic facilities such as boreholes among others and stressed the need for the councils to provide them.
According to him, since the operations of abattoirs are under the local government councils, it behoves chairmen to provide them with the basic amenities for their operations.
Meanwhile, Prince Sodin Akiagba has commended the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nyema Weli for ensuring massive compliance to environmental sanitation exercises.
He said that, this situation had returned Port Harcourt to its glorious past as the garden city of Nigeria.
Prince Akiagba also suggested the need for synergy between the ministries of environment and its Urban Development and its counterparts to check the incessant construction of houses on water right of ways, as the situation has resulted to flooding in the city.
“The Ministry of Environment should work with Urban Development to check the blockage of gutters by some landlords he said.
He assured that the sanitation marshalls would continue to work with the Ministry of Environment to check all forms of anti environment practices by Port Harcourt residents.
