Residents of Rumuoluemeni, an oil-rich community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State were plunged into pandemonium on Monday following the arrest of 10-year old boy suspected to be a witch and another 48-year old man alleged to be his accomplice by the men of Nigeria Police, Iwofe Division in the state.
The Tide learnt that the incident occurred at about 2.00am Monday at Mboduoha Nkpor village in Iwofe Town.
The Tide further learnt that the 10-year old boy had entered a neighbour’s house, and mysteriously turned into a “cat” to bewitch his victims.
A source, who spoke to The Tide Correspondent, said the boy immediately after he jumped into the house to carry out his deadly assignment, turned into cat but luck ran out on him as the occupants of the house woke up from their sleep, and on sighting the cat, pounced on and caught it, just as it quickly turned back to a normal human being.
It was, however, gathered that the occupants of the house immediately raised alarm which attracted other neighbours, who were woken by the noise of the lucky victims.
The Tide further learnt that the alleged “witch” boy had begged the angry crowd not to kill him with a promise to take them to the man who sponsored him for the attack.
However, following a distress call, the Police at the Iwofe Divisional Police headquarters swung into action, and arrested the two suspects as well as saved their lives from being lynched to death by the angry mob determined to set them ablaze.
The Tide Correspondent, who visited the Iwofe Police Station, reports that a large crowd of residents of the area were seen in groups discussing the incident, while the Police were trying to disperse them from the station.
A Senior Police Officer from the station, who does not want his name in print told The Tide Correspondent that “actually, we arrested two people allegedly involved in witch craft”, adding that investigation into the incident was still on-going.
“My friend, you know our rules in the Police force. I cannot speak but only the Police PPRO can do so. But obviously, investigation is on. We are yet to brief the Police Command on the incident because we have not concluded investigation.
“What happened is that people talk more than reality. I was on duty on that day this rumour came, and we did make some arrests. We are still investigating. Even the man in question has denied any involvement”, he stated.
When contacted on phone yesterday, the State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the command was yet to receive detailed briefing from the Iwofe Division, promising to furnish the information on the incident when the details are available.
