National and state legis
latures have been called upon to enact law to regulate grazing and eliminate the recurring feuds between herdsmen and farmers in the country.
The traditional ruler of Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Julius Nnaji, who made the call when the Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) in the state, Mr Isaac Onukwube, visited him said herdsmen had destroyed their farmlands and assaulted some farmers in the community.
“We have received several reports of Fulani herdsmen attacking farmers who complained about destruction of their farmlands.
“Some women have been raped and beaten by these herdsmen and nothing is being done about it by security agents’’, he said.
Nnaji appealed to security agents to redouble their efforts in checking the activities adding that the community did not want to take laws into its hands.
He thanked the agency for the visit and urged them to sensitise the people of the state on ways of curbing security challenges in the country and promised to do everything possible to ensure continued peace and security in his kingdom.
The Director of NOA in the state, Mr Isaac Onukwube, said he came to solicit his support toward the fight against terrorism ravaging the country.
Onukwube said traditional rulers had a major role to play in assisting government to stamp out terrorism and insurgency.
The director said the agency had embarked on sensitisation of communities in the state on issues of security and urged the people to be security conscious in their areas.
“We are appealing to all the royal fathers in the state to assist us in the awareness creation on peace and security to members of your communities. “With your assistance, the people will then ensure that the issue of security becomes a matter of priority to them”, Onukwube said.
He added that the awareness would go a long way to ensure that government’s Safe School Initiative was actualised.
