A group of Port
Harcourt-based legal practitioners known as concerned lawyers are likely to stage a peaceful protest today over the closure of courts in Rivers State, which they say has affected their wellbeing.
A Port Harcourt-based lawyer, who disclosed this to The Tide in Port Harcourt last Monday under the cloak of anonymity, noted that the concerned lawyers would converge at the back gate of the Port Harcourt High Court complex by 8.00am.
He said that the closure of courts in the state was affecting legal practitioner and remarked that the court would not remain closed for ever.
The Port Harcourt based lawyer explained that members of the Nigerian Police would oversee the peaceful protest.
According to him, “the closure of the courts had affected private legal practitioners adversely and we cannot sit down and watch everything go hang. It is unbecoming”.
The lawyer noted that the situation could not be allowed to remain as lawyers (private) derived their means of livelihood from going to courts.
He said the destiny of lawyers were at stake in the festering crisis in Rivers Judiciary.
He called on lawyers to be united and focused in their bid to fight the ills of the society.
The Port Harcourt lawyer urged the Bar to shun divisive elements and embrace unity.
