Lawyer Urges State Govts To Obey Court Orders
A Port Harcourt-based
lawyer and human rights crusader, Barr Endurance Akpelu has described the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria’s industrial action as an offshoot of disobedience to court orders by state governments.
Barr. Akpelu, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt Monday, noted that state governments nationwide has failed to implement the independence of the judiciary as directed by court of competent jurisdiction.
He said governments must make efforts to obey the decisions of the court otherwise crisis would continue to mar meaningful developments.
According to him, “We cannot do without the judiciary as people may. In every given society, conflicts are bound to arise consequently conflict resolution mechanism must be set in motion. The closure of courts in the country is a big setback to our democracy. Democracy is pulsated by the rule of law.”
He explained that the rule of self-help did not hold sway where the rule of law operated.
Barr. Akpelu decried the ugly situation brought about by the industrial action embarked upon Jusun and pointed out that it was pathetic. He said suspects in police custodies as well accused persons in prison custodies were the worst-hit.
He, however, urged government to expedite action towards the resolution of the strike. He remarked that the strike was biting hard, on private legal practitioners.
