The Leadership of
Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed concern over alleged high rate of electricity bills to consumers by the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOS).
In a statement made available to The Tide, NUPENG condemned the Distribution companies for the exorbitant and fraudulent bills even when there is no electricity.
The union said, these fraudulent bills are putting more hardship on the masses who cannot even afford three square meals a day, stressing that there is an urgent need to overhaul the entire system of exorbitant bills.
NUPENG described the development as an injustice, exploitative and oppressive which is not in tune with the energy reform of the transformation agenda of the present administration.
The union statement said “we are disturbed that with the huge monies budgeted and expended on power generation and distribution there is still nothing to write home about except perpetual darkness in many communities in the nooks and crannies of the country only to be faced with huge bills”.
NUPENG called upon the National Electricity regulatory Commission (NERC) to be alive to its responsibilities by ensuring that the electricity companies installed prepaid metres to check arbitrary estimated bills.
The union condemned NERC for its ineffective and inefficient leadership, stressing that the union will join forces with other dis-satified Nigerians to stop these fraudulent bills issued by the distribution companies (DISCOS).
