Don Tasks Confab Delegates On Resource Control

A former Dean of
the Faculty of Engineering in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology(RSUST), Prof Ebenezer Wami has challenged the National Conference delegates to evolve a better derivative principle to assuage agitations of oil mineral producers.
Wami during a chat with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt last Tuesday said the current 18 percent  is not enough to meet the needs of states who produce oil mineral in the country.
He blamed the recent disagreement on the floor of the national confab over the resource allocation on the quest by all parts of the country to partake in oil proceeds from the Niger Delta adding that” it’s high time we make the centre weak so the states can control their resources”.
Commenting on the planned privatization of refineries in the country by the Federal Government, Wami advised that government should not totally divest but should ensure the sector is run by private hands.
He recommended that government should also compel oil multinationals to set up refineries, revealing that some of the firms have refineries abroad and should therefore establish one in the country.
Wami said, “ the oil companies should participate in the downstream and upstream sectors. I believe that active refining will go a long way in providing employment in the country.”
Wami a former chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government warned against plans of giving licenses to bunkerers who vandalise oil installations stressing that their activities cause more environmental pollution and do not create what he called, “ refining efficiency”.
He was of the view that the HYPREP is political and has not made any impact in restoring the environment in the Niger Delta and therefore enjoined the federal government to overhaul the agency for better impact.
