Director Cautions Farmers Against Wastage
The Director, Joval
Processors, Ibadan, Mr Sanni Ganiyu, has urged farmers to handle produce properly this harvest season to avoid unnecessary wastage.
Ganiyu said in Lagos that proper care and handling of produce after harvest would help reduce the rate of spoilage and promote their shelf life.
He said that processing and good packaging would help preserve produce as research had shown that crops begin to go bad as soon as they were harvested.
“Research has shown that as soon as any crop is harvested, it begins to spoil.
“Proper care handling of produce aids storage reduces future scarcity, bulkiness and also maintains freshness.
“Through processing and good packaging value can be added to produce.’’
Ganiyu said that farmers could adopt either the traditional or modern way of processing; stressing that processing and packaging could enhance the quality of produce and generate more income for the producers and government, if such products were exported.
