A Port Harcourt based
lawyer and human rights crasder, Barr. Jackson Assor, has called for truce between the Rivers State Government and the National Judicial Council in order to alleviate the plight of the Rivers State Judiciary, and the common man in general.
Barr. Assor, who stated this in Port Harcourt at the weekend noted that the common man would continue to be the victim of the present scuffle between the NJC and the state government.
He said the lawyers in the state had thought that the strike would be shortlived but the enlongation of the strike had impacted heavily on their finances.
Barr. Assor noted that democracy was replete with checks and balances as no arm of government could lord it over the others.
The Port Harcourt lawyer stated that the average lawyer had suffered untold hardship following the more than one month industrial action embarked upon by the Rivers State branch of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria in June, 2014.
According to him, “Lawyers are not happy as they cannot go to work”.
He said that no client would be willing to pay his lawyer when courts were no longer in session.
He stated that the national dimension that the strike had taken had worsened the situation.
