Commissioner Charges Engineers On Projects Supervision
The Commissioner for
Works, Rivers State, Hon Victor Giadom, has charged engineers of the Ministry of Works to maintain strict supervision of all on-going government projects in the state, in order to ensure that the state gets value for the money spent on the projects .
Giadom gave the charge during a meeting with the engineers held in his office, recently.
He disclosed that a few weeks ago, the state made payment to the local contractors, and that the engineers should diligently supervise their works, adding that the call became necessary because the contractors may hide under the few days delay in payment to abandon or delay their jobs if not strictly monitored.
The works commissioner used the forum to commend the governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for his doged determination at ensuring that the projects started during his administration were completed, disclosing that the state government recently made payment to three local contractors handling projects in the rural communities to ensure they do not abandon the projects.
According to him, the meeting is a wake-up call to all state engineers, and lauded them for their contribution to the ministry, urging them to keep up the spirit.
He hinted that the state government receive only N14 billion, and spens N9 to N10 billion on salaries and uses about N4 or N5 billion on projects development monthly.
Giadom disclosed that unlike some states owing over N300 billion to their contractors, Rivers State is not owing up to N300 billion to its contractors, assuring that even this amount would be paid to the contractors before the end of his administration.
He however enjoined the engineers to provide data on the entire projects handled by the ministry from 2007 to date, indicating their status, and that the ministry has already set up a committee for the purpose, with the Permanent Secretary, Dr Paulinus Wankwoala as chairman, soliciting for cooperation.
