The new Vice-Chancel
lor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, has called on workers of the institution to maintain the legacies of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose name the institution bears.
Ahaneku made the call in Awka when members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the university paid him a courtesy visit on his appointment, recently.
He noted that the spirit of Zik would not rest if people were allowed to destabilise the institution and called on those who contested the position with him to assist him to build a new Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
He said, “we want to reposition the institution within the next five years; this school is the most sought after in the country, therefore, those inside there should command respect and make sure that things do not go wrong.
“We need a lot of prayers for peace not only in the university, we have a commitment to transfer knowledge to the future leaders of this country. “I am thankful to all Nigerians, the stakeholders, colleagues, and the entire university community for their support and the demonstration of their belief in equity and fairness,’’ Ahaneku said.
Earlier, the Chairman of ASUU, Prof. Ike Odimegwu, told the new vice-chancellor to prepare for confrontation anytime he deviated from the ideals that would promote peace, harmony and cooperation.
He said that the union would give him adequate support to succeed, adding that ASUU was in the system to promote quality education in the country for the students.
“We thank God that the journey which started in December 2013 had come to a conclusion notwithstanding the turbulence,’’ Odimegwu said.
The university held the selection interview on Saturday, May 24, to appoint a new vice-chancellor who would take over from the incumbent, Prof. Boniface Egboka, on June 3.
