Rivers Judiciary Crisis To End Soon – Wogu Boms
The Rivers State Attor
ney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon Wogu Boms has expressed hope that the lingering crisis in the state judiciary would soon be over, even as he said, efforts were been made in that direction.
The state commissioner disclosed this while reacting to some questions surrounding the crisis at the state judiciary when he appeared on The Globe In 60 Minutes, an RSTV, phone in audience programme, last Saturday, in Port Harcourt.
Hon. Wogu Boms disclosed that some groups had met him on the way to end the lingering crisis, adding that discussion was on-going with a view to resolve the crisis.
He posited that the ruling of a High Court in Port Harcourt over who was qualified brings to an end the issue of qualification in the appointment of a substantive Chief Judge, adding that by the said judgement, Justice Peter Agumagu was the only qualified person.
“The judge said that Justice Peter Agumagu was the most qualified person among the two nominees made by the NJC. So the issue of who should be appointed has become clear,” he stated.
Commenting on the amended section of the State High Court Law, the state chief law officer opined that the lawmakers did not err in the amended section of the law, adding that they only exercised their constitutional functions.
He disclosed that the amended law was within the purview of the state lawmakers to make and amend adding that the law was only a remedial measures to address the problem encountered in the judiciary when there is no acting or chief judge in the state. Wogu Boms said the chief registrar would stop to carry the assignment of cases when there is a sitting chief judge in the state.
He used the opportunity to call on members of the Bar and Bench to stop being dragged into the crisis by politicians so as to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary.
