Pharmacists Want Review Of Health Policies

In a bid to promote effective healthcare delivery in Nigeria, members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) have called for total review and overhaul of the national health policies to tackle challenges in the health sector.
The call was made during a one day training proramme organised by the Port Harcourt branch of the Society at Escape Event Centre in Port Harcourt recently.
Speaking in an interview, the Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin, Prof Emmanuel Osazuwa said the government should muster the political will to address critical issues in the health sector, such as provision of infrastructure, increase remuneration for health workers, manpower development and review of existing laws.
He said pharmacists in Nigeria were working hard to contribute their quota to the development of the health sector, and emphasised the need for regular training among pharmacists to become better professionals.
Also speaking, a fellow of the pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Pharm Elizabeth Bobmanuel said government should provide the enabling environment for health workers, especially pharmacist to practice.
In his remark, the Rivers State Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Pharm Godson M.T. Chukunda, said the continuing education programme was specified (PCN) to improve the professional knowhow of all pharmacists and tasked members on knowledge acquisition.
Pharmacist Chukunda who restated the commitment of the Rivers State chapter of the society to professional excellence, also canvassed for increased budgetary allocation to the health sector and called for the employment of more pharmacists in public service to meet the health care need of Nigerians.
