NGOs Condemn Discrimination Against Women
Some NGOs
have criticised the perceived rising discriminatory attitude of men toward women in the society.
They made their views known at a three-day seminar in Awka organised to create awareness against such practice.
Mr Abah Agada of the Development in Practise (DIP), in his presentation on “Gender Dynamics”, decried the attitude of sustaining harmful traditional practices.
Agada listed such practices as female genital mutilation, forced child marriages and the preference for male children.
He enjoined Christian leaders and traditional rulers to speak against all forms of discrimination against women while urging media practitioners to expose any discriminatory act against the female gender.
Also, Mr Uche Madubuko of the Justice Development Peace Commission, Onitsha, called for more female participation in policy making.
Madubuko, in a paper entitled: “Leadership and Participation” advised women to organise themselves into smaller units to assist any one in need.
In his presentation, Mrs Oby Nwabueze, the Project Officer, Centre for Gender and Sustainable Development (CGSD), underscored the need to actively involve more women in policy making.
