Man, 21, Bags FiveYears Jail Term
A chief magistrate court
sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted one Ikechukwu Nwogu (21) to five years imprisonment for stealing.
The convict, Ikechukwu Nwogu hails from Ndu Muje village, Gerdo area of Aniocha North Local Government of Delta State but resides at No 28 Samuel Eke Street, Woji in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Ikechukwu Nwogu was arraigned on Monday, May 26, 2014 on three court charge and he pleaded guilty to all the charges brought against him in charge sheet number PMC/923C/14. Following the confession by the accused person, as well as the evidence before the court, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Helen Osamakpo (Esq) directed the prosecutor to review the matter.
The prosecutor, Insp. Godwin Nwinam told the court that the accused person on January 24, 2014 and others now at large had at night hours broke into the chambers of Barr Harvey Ideogu at 12 Isaac Boro Street, Old Government Residential Area (GRA) in Port Harcourt.
Inspector Nwinam further told the court that the accused having broken into the lawyer’s chamber, looted his properties and hired a taxi who took him to Woji Estate, adding that as they were going, the police intercepted them and the accused escaped but was later re-arrested by the taxi driver with the aid of police men from GRA police station.
The prosecutor averred that during interrogation, the accused person made a confessional statement to the police.
Delivering the judgement in the matter, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs Osanakpo, said that following the confession made by the convict, as well as convincing evidence before the court, the convict was liable for the alleged offences.
The presiding chief magistrate held that the prosecution also proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the convict was found guilty on court one, two and three.
The court therefore, sentenced the convict to one year imprisonment for all the courts and that all of them should run concurrently.
