A Port Harcourt-based
lawyer and human rights activist, Barr. Jackson Assor, has flayed the Federal Government for violating Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s fundamental rights.
Barr. Assor, who stated this while speaking with The Tide in Port Harcourt at the weekend expressed regrets that democracy had been emasculated by federal agencies and noted that there was no reason why the Federal Government should violate the rights of its citizens with impunity.
He said it was surprising that the rights of a governor of a federating unit of the Nigerian nation-state could be violated with impunity.
The Port Harcourt lawyer said Governor Amaechi had the constitutional right to freedom of movement and pointed out that there was no reason the soldiers acting under the orders of the Federal Government should stop him from entering Ekiti State.
Barr Assor pointed out that the Peoples Democratic Party led-government had continually singled out the Rivers State Governor for embarrassment and victimisation.
He said opposition was a necessary part of democratic governance.
According to him, “without opposition, our leaders will be tempted to rule according to their whims and caprices.  The rule of law is much better than the rule of man.  Man must rule according to the law and not according to his whims”.
Barr Assor said what was happening in the state was pathetic.
He recounted the story of the former Commissioner of Police in the state, whom he noted used his allegiance to the Federal Government to witch hunt Governor Amaechi.
The lawyer said that Rivers people should see the political crisis in the state as the machination of those opposed to monumental achievements of governor.
He said by the victimization of the governor,   Rivers people were being victimized.
Barr Assor said our hard earned democracy is facing its worst time in the present dispensation and we cannot sit down watch our democracy go haywire. We must act within the limits of the law to rescue our democracy”.
“The dignity of the Rivers people must not be compromised at any cost”, the lawyer stated.
