Gov Tasks Engineers On Building Collapse
The Enugu State
governor, Sullivan Chime has said that the contributions of Nigerian engineers were indispensable in government’s commitment to curb incidences of building collapse and unemployment.
To this end, he has urged Nigerian engineers to evolve strategies that will tackle the challenges of building collapse in the country.
Making this known at a function organised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Enugu last State branch at Enugu, Thursday, Chime stated that most of the challenges in the country can be solved by engineers, if they are at their best.
Represented by the commissioner for commence and industry, the governor said that the exploits of local engineers in reshaping the economy has been unprecedented and that the impact of engineers have been fundamental and valuable in the economy because the solution to some of the teething problems in the country requires engineering-based approach.
He challenged the engineers to emulate their colleagues from other parts of the world in job creation, as they would do better if they were committed to the task of nation building.
“A good example is the Arab contractors who are making good money in Nigeria and other parts of the world. In 2007 when it became necessary for government to re-engineer the state with such edifice that has been emulated by other states across the country, it fell on the engineers,” he said.
Chime said that all the projects being executed by government were done by engineers from the state and the most significant edifice currently being handled by them was the state secretariat.
He said, “The Enugu Workers Secretariat is an engineering marvel and once completed we are sure the building will be winning laurels.”
