As reactions trailed the
just-concluded World Environment Day celebration in Rivers State, a non-governmental organisation, African Centre for Environmental Protection (ACEP), says it would complete the planting of one million trees before the year 2020.
Coordinator of the Centre, Mr. Christian Idibia, who disclosed this at a mini World Environment Day celebration organised by the centre in Port Harcourt, said that so far, more than 634 trees have already been planted in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
Mr. Idibia said that the situation is part of the activities of the centre to check the effect of climate change on the environment.
The centre coordinator said that the effect of climate change is being felt across the world as many coastal communities are on the verge of extinction by tidal erosion.
He, however, blamed the problem on the activities of man, noting that man in his quest for development has caused untold harm to the environment.
Mr. Idibia also said that the activities of man have contributed to the high rate of infectious diseases, while cattle grazers are moving southward due to increasing level of desertification.
Also speaking, the Director of Administration, Rivers State Ministry of Environmental Sanitation Authority, (RSESA) Mr. Lan Gobo, commended the centre for its awareness campaign which is now directed at the younger generation.
Mr. Gobo said that young people must be sensitised on the adverse effect of global warming in the environment with a view to dissuading them from continuing with the mistakes of the older generations.
The organisation, Mrs Kaine Chinwah, said that the campaign is being carried out annually to create awareness in the dangers of environmental pollution.
Mrs. Chinwah said that there is need for attitudinal change by the people stressing that ACEP, which has its emphasis on environment would not relent in sensitising the people on the dangers of environmental pollution.
She also confirmed the on-going tree planting campaign by the centre.
