A former Boxing
Coach, Isaac Ikhuorie,  has urged sports authorities to invest in the training of youths engaging in sports.
Ikhuorie told newsmen in Lagos that such investment would create an avenue for employment opportunities for youths.
He said that if government took sports and youth development seriously, social vices would be curbed.
“A lot has been said and nothing has been done, I just want to use this avenue to appeal to the authorities to get passionate about youth development.
“They are an integral part of our society, other countries have used their foresight to put in place measures to ensure youths are engaged in things that can yield national honors,” he said.
Ikhuorie said that the country should put measures in place to eradicate mediocrity in the sporting sector.
“As a country, we are endowed with talented youths but we solely rely on luck to finish the job for us.
“To step out from the mediocre world of sports or being a low ranked nation, the government must pool resources to build a lasting sports development programme.’’
Ikhuorie also urged athletes to prepare well to get good results at the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games.
“It is not a matter of luck anymore, luck can only get you to a certain point, preparation on the other hand can take you to the medal podium,’’ he said.
