Residents of Oyigbo in the
Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State have blamed the rate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area on the absence of a dumpsite.
The Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority had declared Oyigbo Local Government Area as the dirtest in the State.
A cross section of the people however told The Tide that the authority had not provided it with dumpsites for refuse disposal.
They said that, the absence of dumpsites had led to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area.
A resident of the area, Mr. Michael Chigoziel, also blamed the problem on the large population in the area, as well as the absence of a regulatory authority in the local government area.
“We don’t have a dumpsite in this local government area, so people just throw their waste anywhere”, he said.
Another resident of the area, Mr. Ori Onyebaozulo also blamed the incident on the high concentration of business activities in the area.
He said that some traders selling along the streets just dump refuse anywhere, a situation that has made the local government area one of the dirtiest.
Another respondent, Mr. Sunday Madu said that the state government should rehabilitate the bad roads in the area.
He said that people in the area were suffering as a result of bad roads.
