Customary Court in Abeokuta last Thursday dissolved the 10-year-old marriage between Sukannmi Adenekan, 35, and his wife, Elizabeth, over his wife’s troublesomeness.
The President of the court, Mr Olalekan Akande, held that efforts to reconcile the couple proved abortive.
Akande held that it was evident that the petitioner was no longer interested in the respondent anymore.
He, therefore, dissolved the marriage, and awarded custody of the last child to Elizabeth till he was of age while the first child should decide who to live with.
The court also ordered that Adenekan should pay N3,000 monthly allowances for the upkeep of the last child.
Adenekan, who resides atNo.30 Mokola Street, Abeokuta, had urged the court to dissolve his marriage to his wife.
“My wife is too arrogant and makes trouble with me always. She usually fights, provokes and disrespects me.
“She does not give me rest of mind and treats our two children and me with disdain. I cannot take it any longer. I pray the court to separate us, so that I can have peace,” Adenekan said.
He also urged the court to grant him custody of the first child Ayomide for proper upbringing.
Elizabeth opposed the petition because the marriage was blessed with two children, aged nine and two years, respectively.
“I want the court to know that I am not ready for dissolution. I own the property in his house and he also owes me N80, 000.
“If that is what he wants, I am not prepared to give him custody of my children,’’ Elizabeth said.
Our correspondent reports that the mothers of the couple were in court to support the dissolution of their marriage.
