An Upper Area Court in
Kuje, FCT, last Monday, sentenced a 30-year-old artisan, Timothy Peter to three months in prison for refusing to report a crime.
Peter, who resided at Ushafa in Bwari Area Council, FCT, was charged with one count of failure to report a crime.
The presiding judge, Malam Adamu Wakili, sentenced Peter after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Wakili, however, gave him an option of N5,000 fine.
The judge also ordered the police to arrest and bring to justice one Leonard Mathias, who allegedly committed the crime.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Ninyio Ishaya, told the court that the case was lodged at the Kuje Police Station on June 3 by the complainant, Mr Daniel Aduka of Pegi Area in Kuje.
Ishaya said that Mathias, now at large, stole a micro wave and a Nokia cell phone valued at N80,000 belonging to the complainant.
He said that Peter saw when Mathias stole the items but refused to report the matter to the complainant or to the police.
The prosecutor said that Peter and Mathias were employed by the complainant to do some paint work for him in the house.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the Penal Code.
When the charges were read to Peter, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
“I told Mathias not to steal but he won’t listen; he said he needed money for his child’s naming ceremony.”
