Amaechi Donates Nigeria’s Constitution To Students
The Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, Saturday in Port Harcourt donated free copies of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria translated for young people to hundreds of Secondary School Students of Rivers and Akwa Ibom States.
Making the donation on behalf of the governor at the 2014 Open Forum Day organized by Total E&P Niger Limited, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Sementari, said the governor’s aim of donating the books was to enable the students have clearer understanding of the constitution.
According to the governor, ït is only when you read and understand the constitution that you know your rights as citizens, what you owe the country and what the government of the country owes you as a citizen.
Ëvery child has a right to education. So, when a governor builds school for you, he did not do you any favour but he is doing his job”, he said.
“When we teach the young people to be honest and some of the adults don’t want to be honest, you have to ignore them and their bad behavour”, he told the students, and stressed that “if Nigeria is going to change, there is the need to behave in good ways not irresponsibly.
“Ït is your right to know. You have the right to ask questions,”, the governor said, and warned the students not to emulate bad behaviours from adults because at the end of the day, “ÿou are responsible to your behavior. Don’t let your parent’s bad behavours affect you”.
Semenatari said the governor’s gesture is akin to what obtains in America where the citizens are thought the constitution to enable them know their rights and obligations to America.
Earlier, the Deputy Managing Director of Total E&P, Port Harcourt District, Mr. Nicholas Brunet had advised the youths, drawn from Rivers and Akwa Ibom Schools, to make integrity a common standard in their daily dealings.
He said by adopting a life-style of honesty as the best policy in life, they would enjoy so many gains associated with honesty as dishonesty goes with pains in diverse perspectives.
Brunet explained that the company had consistently held the event for the past 11 years as a demonstration of its commitment to human capital development, especially that of youths as part of its Corporate, Social Responsibility.
The Deputy Managing Director, who was represented at the event by the executive Director, Port Harcourt District, Engr. Patrick Ngene, said “Honesty; My Best Policy”, which was the theme for the event became relevant in view of the rebranding and re-orientation in our value system as a people.
