As part of efforts to
upgrade existing facilities and expand clinical activities, the management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has completed and commissioned a 43-suites ultra modern General Out-Patient Department (GOPD) clinic extension building.
The chairman, Board of Management of UPTH, Dr Olusegun Ogundimu who commissioned the new building at the hospital premises said the project which cost N86m, was carried out through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The Board Chairman said the project became necessary following the over stretching of existing facilities and to effectively respond to the demands of out-patient services in the hospital.
He explained that the new facility had 43 suites with specialised medical equipment, well furnished offices, a spacious lounge to serve as patients’ waiting room.
The new project according to the Board Chairman, “marks the beginning of a new era of service delivery, and will create an enabling environment for the hospital to introduce more speicalised services and accommodate more clinical staff to cope with the accompanying increase in patient-load that is expected.”
He emphasized the need for public private partnership to complement the effort of Government in the provision of effective healthcare delivery for the people.
In his remark, the Chief Medical Director of UPTH, Dr Aaron Ojile said the management of the Hospital was poised to expand its capacity of service delivery, noting that there were plans to upgrade existing infrastructure in the hospital to meet up the demands of the teeming number of patients that visit the hospital.
He said the hospital presently has 800 beds, but receive over 1000 patients daily and called for a multi sectoral approach in the provision of health care services and canvassed for greater funding for the health sector.
