TUC, Factory Workers Celebrate Day For Safety, Health
As the International
Labour Organisation (ILO) set aside a day to mark the World Day for Safety and Health for workers in factories and hazardous environment, the State chapter of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has joined the workers to celebrate the day.
This year’s event took place at the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt with the theme: “Safety and Health in the Use of Chemicals at Work”.
Speaking to The Tide at the event, the Chairman of TUC, Rivers State chapter, Comrade Chika Onuegbu said workers in the state joined workers globally to celebrate the day on every April 28 each year to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases.
Onuegbu said that the event was held to create awareness on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide suffered by the factories workers.
He said the union had highlighted and focused this year’s event on the health and safety risks associated with chemicals at work places.
The TUC boss said chemicals posed a broad range of potential adverse effects on health in the discharge of their responsibilities at work place.
He urged the workers to be careful with the use of chemicals at work place, stressing that proper measure should be put in place to safeguard the social life and health of the workers in chemical industries.
