The Supervising Commis
sioner for Transport and Tourism in Imo State, Prof. Okey Okoro, has called for the streamlining of the functions of Vehicles Inspection Officers and the Federal Road Safety Commission.
Okoro made the call in Owerri at the inauguration of a 12-man committee on the adoption of a model law for vehicle administration in the state, Wednesday.
The committee was drawn from the state ministries of works, transport, justice, board of internal revenue, federal controller of works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency.
He said that differentiating their functions would enhance traffic on Nigerian roads, and urged the committee to come up with recommendation to handle the traffic situation in Owerri.
The commissioner noted that the growing population in Owerri had called for introduction of traffic laws in order to ease movement of vehicles in the city centre.
In his remarks, the FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Yusuf Salami, said the establishment of motor vehicle administration was presented to the National Council on Works at Nasarawa State in August, 2009.
Salami said the council had advised states to establish individual motor vehicle administration to address traffic challenges on the nation’s roads.
