Sanitation Marshalls Restate Opposition T o Use Of Fire Woods in Abattoirs

tion Marshalls have restated their opposition to the use of firewood by abattoir operators to burn meat.
The coordinator, Prince Sodin Akiaba who disclosed this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, also said that the group is opposed to the continuous use of tyres to burn meat.
Prince Akiaba said that using firewood by abattoir operators to burn their meat will lead to deforestation, thereby  exposing the environment to natural hazards.
He said that in as much as the group would prefer fire wood to tyres in the burning of meat, it effects on the environment would be devastating stressing that this situation therefore calls for a serious attention by the relevant agencies for another solution.
The sanitation Marshalls co-ordinator said that both the Rivers State Ministries of Environment and Agriculture officials as well as the various local government councils must put their heads together and come up with another, solution to the problem.
He described the continuous usageof tyres for burning of meant by the various abattoirs as a direct challenge to the government to do something about it, as the situation is hazardous to the health of the people.
Prince Akiaba who examined the State of various abattoirs in the state, said that something must be done to check the way meat are being processed by abattirs as the health of the public is in danger.
According to him, the regulatory bodies must be up and doing stressing that enforcement officers from both the relevant ministries and the local government councils must regularly visit  the abattoirs to see how things are done there.
He said that any abattoirs that fail to comply must be shut down and its operator arrested prosecuted.
