The Rivers State Police
Command has given reason why it suspended activities of all youth bodies in the State.
The acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Grace Iringe-Koko in a release said the decision to suspend all youth activities in the State was occasioned by the recent escalation of cult activities in the State.
The statement stated that the police as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the state, has the responsibility to ensure that all gatherings for whatever reason, whether politically motivated or otherwise are carried out within the ambits of the law and in a way that the security of the State would not be threatened in any manner.
According to the statement, any gathering of any nature by person (s), youth/pressure groups and associations must apply for police protections so that the police can put in place adequate security mechanism to prevent any form of breakdown of law and order.
She averred that the measure was meant to ensure that law and order was attained in the State for the interest of all, adding that it can effectively be achieved if all personal and group interests are not placed above the security of the State and its people.
“Consequently, all hands must be on deck to ensure that acts that have the tendency of causing breach of the peace in the State are not embarked upon by any person or groups”.
“I have already directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to clamp down on any youth body or groups that hold or organise meetings without the requisite security coverage. Such groups or gathering by whatever name will be considered to be an unlawful assembly and shall be made to face the full wrath of the law as there will be no hiding place for them” the statement warned.
The statement however, encouraged all law-abiding citizens of the State to go about their businesses and further enjoin them to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement to the police even as it solicited the cooperation of all including the media for a better and peaceful Rivers State.
