The Chairman, House of
Representatives Committee on Environment and member representing Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife has warned governors of states in erosion prone areas to be more careful and proactive to avert imminent dangers.
Ekwunife while inspecting the level of work at the dredging site of Sakamori in the commercial city of Onitsha expressed fears that with the increase in the erosion sites in Anambra State and other parts of the South East geopolitical zone, there is indeed every need to stop the erosion menace in order to avert imminent loss of lives and property.
She called on the state governments of affected areas to tighten their belts and try all they could to make sure that the lingering flood and desert encroachment in some parts of the North are nipped in the bud to avert future calamity that may follow the effect of the environmental hazard.
“I advise the state governors especially in the flood prone areas to begin now to make adequate preparation so that flooding does not take them unawares in order to prevent the impending calamity. People should be more careful about the environment. There is also need for Governors in the North to also take full charge of the desert encroachment in their areas to be able to nip in the bud, the challenges of desert encroachment,” she said.
On the issues of security, the lawmaker called for collaboration with the security agencies to curtail the devastating effects of the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
She said for Nigeria to come out of the Boko Haram challenge, people must take full charge of the security of their environment and always report any suspicious movement of persons and objects around their areas to security agents whose duty it is to investigate and work with the information.
