Refuse Bins Disappearance Worries PH Residents

Residents of Port Harcourt
and environs have expressed concern over the continuous  disappearance of refuse bins in the streets of Port Harcourt. A cross section of residents who spoke to The Tide in Port Harcourt, said that this situation has increased the rate of indiscriminate refuse disposals across the city.
A trader at Mile I Market, Mrs Helen Adada, said that the refuse bins the Rivers State waste management agency, have disappeared stressing that this has led traders at the market to throw refuse either into the gutters or on the roads. She said that the Authorities concerned need to come to the aid of the traders by bringing back the bins to the market.
Mrs Adada also advised the state government to reconstruct the gutters as well as cover them to check dumping of refuse into it.
Also speaking, a man who gave his name as Mr Amos, said that there is need for environmental education as far as refuse diaposal is concerned. According to him, people need good and quality education as information is vital ot the success of any programme.
He also stressed the need for enforcement of all relevant laws against the dumping of refuse into the gutters while the bins should be placed at every street’s corners in the city.
According to him, the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and the Sanitation Authority must intensify efforts to ensure that Port Harcourt continue to maintain its status as the garden city of Nigeria.
