Pensions: Power Sector Retirees Protest In Owerri

ria Union of Pensioners (NUP) electricity, sector have protested over their unpaid pensions in Owerri.
The Tide was reliably informed that the pensioners were demanding the immediate payment of their gratuities and other entitlements since they were retrenched.
The union members decried the phased downsizing of the workforce in the power sector by the Federal Government prior to the privatisation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
The pensioners were under the former PHCN Plc Owerri Office now under the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The Tide source said the former workers also decried the sale of available power infrastructure to private owners’ without adequate consideration of the workers’ welfare, payment of their retirement and terminal benefits.
The union members said their retrenchment had created abnormal situation for them because of the discriminatory policy that was inconsistent with organisational rules and regulations.
