Obi, Others Mourn Ex-NUJ Chairman
The immediate past Gov
ernor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, has praised the former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in the state, late Mrs Tochukwu Omelu, in the state, as an innovative leader.
Similarly, the governorship candidate of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) in the Novermber 16, 2013 Anambra State governorship election, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, described her death on March 29 as shocking.
Obi, who was at Omelu’s interment at Isiokwe village, Onitsha, described her transition as a painful experience, which had left in its wake a vacuum and disruption in the lives of her beloved ones.
“As a Journalist and the former Chairman of the NUJ, Anambra State chapter, she contributed immensely to the development of journalism in the state,’’ Obi said.
He disclosed that Omelu was instrumental to many innovations by the union in recent years, adding that even though she had passed on, the fact that she lived for humanity inspired hope that she was resting in the bosom of the Lord.
“We are also consoled that she contributed to the edification of the society in her own ways,” he said.
Ezeemo, who sponsored the construction of the NUJ secretariat building in the State during Omelu’s tenure, described her death as unfortunate.
He expressed regrets that she died at a time she was most needed to help nurture womanhood and described the former union leader as a journalist who practised within the confines of the ethics of the profession.
In her tribute, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Enugu State, Mrs Chieso Aniwagwa, said the union had lost one of its hardworking leaders.
She called on the members to strive to maintain the standard of practice which she exhibited during her lifetime.
A former National Internal Auditor of the union, Miss Grace Nnadozie, who works with the National Light Newspaper, said the works of the deceased would always speak for her.
Nnadozie praised the late Omelu for her fearless leadership when she piloted the affairs of the union in Anambra for six years with solid achievements to show for her tenure.
