NNL: Poor Officiating Worries Coach
Chief Coach of Federal
Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FC, Abuja, Uche Okagbue, has called for improvement in the standard of officiating in Nigeria National League (NNL) matches played in the Northern part of the country.
Speaking to newsmen after the match between his club and Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi, Okagbue said poor officiating was having a negative impact on the league.
According to him, the problem is more pronounced in Division 1 matches, noting that in Division 2, clubs do win, draw or lose at home or away from home.
“There is need to improve on the NNL officiating in the Northern states.
“You can see that in Division 1, we have this problem of ‘home teams must always win’ syndrome, whereas that is not the case in Division 2.
Okagbue, a former player of the National U- 17 team, the Golden Eaglets, acknowledged that as humans, referees could make mistakes, but added that they should make efforts to improve on their judgment in the field.
He said the referee’s judgment that awarded the first goal to Wikki FC against his team in their Saturday encounter, was questionable.
The match ended 2-0 in favour of Wikki Tourists FC.
The first goal came in the 3rd minute through Mustapha Ibrahim, while Marine Uche increased the tally in the 32nd minute.
