No fewer than 100 per
sons living with disabilities last Saturday benefited from free glaucoma screening in Karomajiji Community in the FCT.
The  free glaucoma screening was organised by the Destitute Kids Foundation, an NGO, for the disabled colony in the community.
The NGO, which was founded in 2007, is dedicated to improve the lives of orphans, terminally ill children, unskilled females and less privilege adults.
The founder of the organisation, Mrs Queen Samuel said that the purpose of the outreach was to educate the people on glaucoma as well as conduct free glaucoma screening.
Samuel encouraged the people living with disabilities to check their eyes at least once a year to prevent any eye disease such as glaucoma.
He said, “If you are over the age of 40 or you have a family history of glaucoma, you should have a complete eye examination with an eye doctor every one to two years. “If you have health problems such as diabetes or a family history of glaucoma or at risk of other eye diseases, you may need to visit your eye doctor more frequently.’’
Samuel called on well-meaning Nigerians to support government and help the less privileged in the society, saying “government cannot do it alone’’.
“You do not need to have money to help these ones; you can be a volunteer, give your time, knowledge, skills and expertise and empower the less privileged. “You can also support those that have charity organisations to carry out their work, we have to start from our communities to make a change,’’ he said.
The participants expressed their gratitude to the organisation and they called on well-meaning Nigerians to follow suit and assist them.
