INEC To Use Permanent Voter’s Card For 2015 Elections
The Independent Na
tional Electoral Commission (INEC), says the commission would issue permanent voter’s card for the 2015 elections to guard against the challenges that trailed previous elections in Nigeria.
The INEC Commissioner for Operations, Mr Nuhu Yakubu, made this known in Abuja when he visited the National Conference Committee on Political Parties and Electoral Matters.
Yakubu said the commission had almost concluded the production of the card to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2015.
According to him, registration of voters for election is synonymous to a credible election.
“The commission has almost completed the production of permanent voter card.
“The permanent voter card is a smart card; it is similar to a credit card which has a chip imbedded in it.
“The chip captures all one’s biometrics and data like finger print, photograph, address and photograph as well as telephone number, among others.
“It transmits signal. That is the kind of card that the commission is going to use during 2015 elections,” he said.
Yakubu said the commission was determined to take necessary measures that would ensure that the 2015 general elections were properly conducted.
He urged all stakeholders to assist the commission to actualise free and fair elections, adding that the success of election was not solely dependent on the commission alone.
