Imo To Transform Tourism Sector
The Imo State Super
vising Commissioner for Ministry of Transport and Tourism, Prof. Okee Okoro, said last Tuesday in Owerri that the state government planned to develop tourism into a huge revenue-yielding sector.
A statement issued by the ministry quoted Okoro as saying this when officials of the South East Zone of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
Okoro said the move was in line with the vision of Gov. Rochas Okorocha to reposition the economy of the state and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the people.
The commissioner said the government would pay special attention to the welfare of staff of the state tourism board and look into matters relating to their pension.
He urged the NTDC officials to come up with ideas on how to fully develop the tourism sector.
The NTDC Coordinator for the zone, Chief John Ohaneje, said the visit was meant to discuss issues affecting tourism in the zone.
Ohaneje said the NTDC was happy with efforts being made by the state government toward developing the tourism sector.
He, however, urged the government to address problems affecting the staff of Imo Tourism Board, stating, “We want the staff of Imo Tourism Board to be placed on pension to enable them to be on the same footing with their counterparts in other states of the federation.’’
He also urged the governor to step-up awareness campaign in areas of attractions and package tourist destinations in the state.
