Govt, Stakeholders Need More Commitment On IT – NCS

ciety (NCS) says the nation has not grown technologically, in spite of recent achievements and improvements recorded in the digital landscape.
The NCS, in a statement made available to newsmen  in Lagos, last Tuesday said that more still needed to be done to enhance sustainable technological development.
In the statement signed by the NCS Chairman, Publicity, Events and Trade Services Committee, Mr Jide Awe, the society said that only concerted efforts would lead Nigeria to the desired Information Technology realm.
“The role of technology is vital in empowering citizens economically and socially, and laying the foundations for sustainable development.
“However, talk is cheap. We have had more discussions on technology than ever before.
“Digital inclusion is still a challenge that cannot be covered up by empty sloganeering,” it quoted Prof. David Adewumi, the NCS President, as saying.
It said that the NCS was walking the walk through inclusive dialogue and strategic initiatives.
According to it, at the core of NCS, strategy was practical engagement with partners and stakeholders on advancing Nigeria’s digital future for sustainable national development.
It said that the society felt strongly about its lack of inclusion, lack of professional representation in decision-making in critical sectors and absence of follow up.
“The nation fails when it fails to recognise those creating jobs faster and playing critical roles in developing Nigeria’s knowledge economy.
“There is certainly a serious need for adequate representation of Nigerian IT professionals in decision and policymaking in governance and critical sectors.
“For example, how in all seriousness can the future of any nation be discussed in the absence of the technological sector in the 21st century?” Adewumi queried.
It said that their commitment toward technology, compelled the society to choose the theme, “Building a Knowledge-Based Economy in Nigeria: The Role of Information Technology,” for the NCS’-scheduled 25th National Conference.
The conference, it said, would take place between July 23rd and July 25th, at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu.
