The Economic and Finan
cial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it convicted 117 Nigerians in 2013 for various corruption offences, even as it has solicited the cooperation of the media in the fight against corruption in the country.
The Chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Lamorde stated this while delivering his opening remarks at a one-day workshop on “Effective Reporting of Economic and Financial Crimes”, organised by the EFCC for journalists in the South-South region  held at Mina Hotel, Port Harcourt, Monday.
Lamorde disclosed that the commission was also actively engaged in the investigation and prosecution of persons and organizations implicated in the oil  subsidy fraud through which the nation lost billions of Naira.
The chairman, who was represented by Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the  commission, Mr. Osita Nwajah, said that a good number of the suspects are  already being prosecuted in the courts, while tangible recoveries in assets have been recorded, adding that the same applied to the fraud in the pensions sector  as well as the theft of crude oil in our creeks.
He stated that the fight against financial and economic crimes is not a task that the commission can surmount alone, adding that all stakeholders, particularly the media, must collaborate and cooperate with the commission to make the fight a  success.
