Deputy Speaker Lauds Rivers Journalists For Defending Democracy

The Deputy Speaker of the
Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee has commended journalists in the state for their contributions towards sustenance of democracy in the state.
Hon. Kwanee who made the commendation last Monday in a dinner he organised for a member of the Assembly Press Corps, Mr. Rusky Amadi to mark his 50th birthday in Port Harcourt, said the press in the state was fearless and was able to stand on the part of truth and justice in ensuring a proper democracy in the state.
According to him, “If the press did not stand on the part of the truth, and justice, and say that 25 is more than 5 persons, there would not be democracy in Rivers State.
“I choose this moment to celebrate with the press. It is not Rusky Amadi we are celebrating today, but the press and beauty of democracy that have been made possible by the press in Rivers State”, he said.
The Deputy Speaker also noted that the success recorded by the present administration in the state was due to the efforts and commitment of the press, adding that the contributions of the press have sustained democracy in the state.
He urged journalists not to be intimidated in the discharge of their duties by enemies of progress and anti-democratic elements.
Also speaking at the occasion, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Opakar Dokubo, commended Hon. Kwanee for recognising the efforts of the press in ensuring that democracy strives in the state.
Dokubo expressed happiness that the Deputy Speaker has built a robust relationship with the press, assuring that the press in the state would continue to uphold the truth as well as defend democracy at all times.
In appreciation, Mr. Amadi commended the Deputy Speaker for the honour and said he was overwhelmed by the action of Hon. Kwanee to celebrate his birthday for him in a unique way.
