A track and field coach
with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Isaac Osagie, has expressed satisfaction with the performance of athletes at the just-concluded 2nd AFN Golden League.
The 2nd AFN Golden League was held on April 26 in Ilorin, Kwara, while the 1st Golden League was staged on April 12 in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Osagie told newsmen in Lagos that most of the participants were in top shape at the one-day event.
“Most of the athletes at the league performed above expectation and I am highly impressed with the outcome of the event,’’ he said.
He noted that the money involved motivated most of the athletes to step up their performance at the event.
The coach added that the league was a good platform to prepare athletes ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Games would hold from July 23 to August 3.
He urged the AFN to organise more competitions that would sharpen the competitive edge of the athletes ahead of the biennial Games.
“The Golden League is a good avenue for our athletes to test run their skills.
“AFN should also come up with more competitions to increase athletes’ competitiveness ahead of the Games,’’ he said.
Osagie commended AFN President Solomon Ogba for boosting the tempo of athletics in the country.
The third leg of the Golden League would hold at the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Ondo State on May 10.
