The Chairman of the
Lagos State Branch of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Mr Olorode Adefowope, yesterday advised commuters to be security conscious at motor parks.
Adefowope, who gave the advice in an interview with newsmen said there was need for commuters to be vigilant when at motor parks.
The chairman stated that the call became necessary, following the bomb blast at a bus station in Nyanyan, Abuja last week.
“We are introducing many security gadgets at our parks and we call on passengers to also help us in giving useful information that would assist us.
“Security is not a one-man or government business alone, all of us should join our hands in the struggle to make Nigeria a well secured nation.”
He cautioned drivers to always drive with care, adding that the destinies of many people were placed in their hands whenever they were behind steering wheels.
“Be safety conscious by driving with care, respect traffic managers, especially our interstate drivers who drive on the roads that are under rehabilitation, such as the Lagos-Ibadan expressway,’’ Adefowope said.
Also speaking, Mr Tajudeen Agbede, Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), urged passengers to always go to designated motor parks to board buses, especially those travelling out of the state.
According to him, this is to ensure that detailed information about them is entered in the passengers’ manifest in the case of any eventuality.
Agbede also urged passengers to be mindful of the activities of other passengers in the bus and report suspicious movements to the necessary security agents at the parks.
He said that security personnel in uniforms or plain clothes had been deployed to the parks to monitor the movement of passengers as well as their luggage.
“We are concerned about our passengers’ security, the reason we have to beef up security at our parks and we pray that such ugly incident that happened recently at the Nyanya Motor Park, Abuja will never happen again.
“Passengers should also assist in monitoring and reporting any suspected activity going on in the park as it is a free entry and exit ground for people.’’
He called on passengers to always report the recklessness of drivers to the nearest office of the union.
